Students: Skin in the game!
Dear Students, this post is really for you. The only way this process will work for your full benefit is if you have skin in the game. What does that mean? That means that throughout this entire process, you will be the one driving it, you are the one putting in the effort, and on the backside, you will get out of it exactly what you put into it. Look at it this way, and we know it’s hard to view from 17- or 18-years old (we were there once…) but see if you could view it this way. Imagine walking to the front of your classroom right now and having all the information about you written up on the whiteboard. You were given this amazing chance to wipe off everything and start new down a path of your choosing. That is exactly where you are with college right now. After you graduate from college nobody will ask for your high school transcript. Nobody will ask what your SAT or ACT scores are, you will have then given the opportunity to re-create yourself into the person you may know you want to be, or you may be going to college to find. This is a gift that is only given once, and you are on the precipice of it. So, what does skin in the game mean? It means that if you approach this correctly and put forth the effort to make sure that this is the best possible step for you, the outcomes are endless, and these outcomes will be driven by you, not decisions made for you by someone else. Use this opportunity to take the reins to your own life, get your skin in the game – nobody wants decisions made for them.
