College Prep Coach was founded on the idea that the cost of a four-year school for most families is ridiculous.  After spending the first part of his professional life selling for Fortune 100 companies, which included selling money for GE capital after receiving an MBA with an emphasis in corporate finance, John started a career as a High School Guidance Counselor.  Frustrated with the fact that Guidance Counselors were not permitted to discuss finances with families, he started College Prep Coach to do exactly that.  To this day, he is bewildered about how a proper college planning session can occur without the discussion of finances.  From this, College Prep Coach was born, and ever since that day, it has been one of the primary goals of College Prep Coach to discuss finances with the family and then target the schools which maximize merit-based scholarships so the family’s financial goals can be met.  The end goal is to not only get students accepted into their targeted colleges, but to do so while earning merit-based scholarships, in other words, monies which do not need to be repaid.

Coaches

Over the years, I have had Independent College Admission Coaches across the country, asking to participate in our efforts.  The redesign and restructuring of the website targeted finally being able to incorporate them into the program.  Starting in fall 2026, College Prep Coach will be adding Independent College Admission Coaches from across the country to our bullpen of coaches available to help you and your student.  When the time is right, which will be per each family, you will be able to connect with them and find one which best suits your needs.  This may be due to their geographic location of the schools your student will be targeting, it may be due to their academic background, their majors, or anything else.  The basic structure of the program will be delivered through this website, emails, and text notifications, but the interaction with a Coach will be completely up to you.  In the end, you may decide to use one, you may not, but either way, they are there and willing to help, at any point in the process.  If the decision is made to work with a coach, you will be contracting directly with them for their services.

The core of the program is delivered through online presentations, emails, and text communication.  The program is broken out into five different sections: 6th – 8th Grade, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior.  Each section will focus on relevant information for that period of time (i.e. – we will not talk about how to structure a college essay until the Senior year section), and for each section there is a syllabus which will have upwards of twenty, 2 - 5 minute presentations on ideas and thoughts to which you should be paying attention at that time.  In addition to these presentations, you and your student will receive a bi-weekly email reminding you of items on which you should be focusing, as well as upcoming items so they do not catch you flat footed.  At any time, you are encouraged to email and ask any questions you may have.  The presentations and the emails are thorough, but if you have a question, there is no limit to the emails you can send.  If our email communication doesn't get your questions answered, we will get on the phone and talk.  As part of the registration process, we will be requesting a copy of your student’s transcript to confirm their year in school, familiarize ourselves with the curriculum of their school, and so we understand who they are as a student and how best to help.

Our pricing is straightforward and fair, and on an annual basis, is as follows:

Our pricing is straightforward and fair, and on an annual basis, is as follows:

The 6th - 8th Syllabus, although it covers a full three years, is less expensive than the others because we want you to be familiar and comfortable with the program before you commit the $595 per year going forward.  We have also priced it on an annual basis in case you get halfway through the program and believe that we have delivered as much as you need and you can pick up the ball and run from there.  By structuring it this way, we believe we have made it as accessible as possible.  The Coaching Section will not be unlocked until you pay for at least one high school year, after such time you are free to communicate with any coach you choose.

As stated before, the cost of each Coach will vary based on the services you require.  As an example, our Head Coach will carry no more than 8 to 10 students per year.  His base coaching cost is $1,750, which again, is over and above the annual cost of each year, or Syllabus.  This amount includes review help for either, or both, standardized prep tests (ACT and SAT), help with class selection in high school, help with college selection, help with the applications, and most of all, help with two college essays.  One of the essays will more than likely be the main essay for The Common Application, the other essay will more likely be an essay for a particular Honors College at a school where they will be applying.  If your student is planning to apply to numerous highly selective schools and is looking at doing 10 to 20 essays, obviously this number will go up.  If your student is planning on only applying to colleges where no essay is needed, this number will go down.  We will be discussing essays starting in junior year, but the quality of these essays should not be overlooked.  For means of budgeting, a Coach will more than likely end up costing anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000.

Students, this one is completely for you.  It's your life, you must get engaged in this decision.  Nobody, and we mean, likes decisions made for them, and more specifically, we have never met a group of individuals who dislike having decisions made for them more than high school students, so engage.

Throughout this program, you will encounter the Trifecta – Best Fit model.  It takes a look at the student and identifies who they are at this point in time.  We stress the “at this point in time” statement because they're going to college to figure out who they're going to be in the future as very few know this upon graduating from high school.  The Trifecta model is very simple.  It looks at grades, standardized test scores, and the rigor of their high school experience.  Looking at these three items, our job is to work with you to find what we call the “Best Fit” colleges, those colleges where we feel your student will have the best opportunities to excel, learn from and with their peers, and grow.  College should be a time of growth and not a time to struggle, not fit in, and work 24 hours a day just to keep up.  If that is your college experience, you did not make a good choice in our opinion.  We can help you with this decision.

As we see it, the most important day of this program and all your effort is the day after your college graduation.  In working with you and your student, if your student graduates from college in an area (major - field of study) which interests them greatly, and in which they have tremendous curiosity, then we did part of our job.

As we see it, the most important day of this program and all your effort is the day after your college graduation.  In working with you and your student, if your student graduates from college in an area (major - field of study) which interests them greatly, and in which they have tremendous curiosity, then we did part of our job.  Along the way, if they were able to secure internships, get great grades, make connections, and hopefully graduate with a job so they know exactly what they're doing the day after graduation, then we hit a home run.  As stated, the most important day in our opinion is the day after graduation.  On that day, if they sit down and say, “OK, what's next?”, we failed.  Our program is designed to launch them into their lives, not simply find a place for them to study for four years and then again, ask, “What's next?”.
